Why Hire Graduates

Graduates

Hiring new employees, especially graduates in these uncertain times may not seem the best idea. But on the other hand, running a business is always accompanied by a certain level of uncertainty and only business owners who are willing to take chances can succeed in today’s cut-throat competition. It is not easy to take chances when seeing other businesses shutting their doors but now is the best time to seize the opportunities. But how can hiring graduates help your business grow? Here are only a few of many reasons why hire graduates in these uncertain times:

Proven return on investment. Graduates cost more than non-graduates, however, the research has shown that their contribution to profit is considerably larger than that of non-graduates. In addition, graduates are no longer as expensive as they used to be.

Higher flexibility. Most business owners who seek qualified labour force put a major emphasis on experience. However, graduates have several advantages over their experienced colleagues and higher flexibility is one of their main advantages. They do not have any work patterns in their head yet which is why they adapt to their workplace a lot easier than their older colleagues who may need more time to make “the switch”.

Quick learning. Graduates are generally fast learners which takes away much of the advantages of their experienced colleagues, especially if the workplace involves the use of new technologies or/and business solutions. They are usually also more enthusiastic about work and are not easily scared away by challenges and obstacles.

Providing new ideas and solutions. Graduates may need some time to learn to use their knowledge in practice, however, they are an excellent source of new ideas and solutions which are the driving force of most businesses.

Good business skills. Graduates have better business skills in comparison to non-graduates. In addition to having an excellent theoretic and sometimes also practical knowledge in their field, graduates typically also have well developed verbal and non-verbal communication skills, and solid data analysis and problem solving abilities.

Increasing competition within the team. Due to their enthusiasm about work, a wealth of ideas and a wide range of abilities acquired during the study, graduates can increase competition within the team which in turn increases work efficiency and productivity. It is crucial, however, that the competition within the team is stimulating and motivating, and that the relationship between the members of the team do not become hostile.

As you can see, hiring a graduate can be a lucrative business move even if the times are not particularly encouraging. However, not all graduates are the same and to be able to benefit from hiring a graduate, it is necessary to find one with solid academic knowledge and enthusiasm to work for your company which, unfortunately, is not as easy as it may seem at a first glance. As a result of relatively high unemployment rate among graduates, they have become increasingly non-selective about employment opportunities. This makes it very difficult to determine which ones are really interested in working for your firm and which ones are only interested in getting a job.
